Lunch Box Special

In my lunch box, I enjoy...

Did you know that the mid-day meal must provide one third of a child’s daily nutritional needs? That’s why it is so important that you fill your children’s lunchbox with the nourishing and appetizing foods they enjoy.

A balanced lunch should include at least one item from each food group of the Canadian Food Guide.

Balanced does not preclude creative! Here are a few ideas…

Sandwiches for every taste

The first step to making a sandwich is choosing the right bread. Forget about the usual sliced white or brown bread and opt for raisin or hazelnut bread, multigrain, rye or onion bread, ciabatta, pita or flavoured tortillas (basil, dried tomato…). You can even toast your sandwiches (panini for example) and eat them cold.

When making sandwiches, the only limit is your imagination…

Milk, vegetables and meat are among the foods a child will most often balk at. Here are a few tips to help ensure that your child gets the recommended amount of these vital elements :

  • Serve raw vegetables with a nutritious dip at snack time or as an appetizer instead of as part of a main course.

  • Add them to other dishes: cut them in tiny little pieces and incorporate in sauces, omelettes or serve in soups garnished with designs make with cream. Also keep in mind that most children love vegetable juices.

  • As for meat, make sure to serve tender pieces, cooked in a little broth and cut in bite-sized, easy-to-chew pieces.

  • For milk produces, always have on hand: yogurt, cheese and milk in individual formats. They deliver calcium along with high quality proteins. Soymilk makes a great choice: Certain types supply up to 30% of the daily recommended need in calcium.
