Concentrated laundry detergents
A growing eco-friendly trend is the use of concentrated
laundry detergents. Far from being a passing phase, this trend is
here to stay because doing your laundry using two or three times
less detergent just makes sense.
The use of concentrated laundry detergent is a more environment-friendly option for many reasons:
- Concentrated laundry detergent containers are two or three times smaller than regular detergent containers so less packaging (plastic) and therefore less energy is used in the production process;
- Concentrated laundry detergents contain less water;
- Trucks can carry more containers per load thereby reducing the pollution caused by transportation;
- The smaller containers take up less space in the recycling
bin.
In addition to using concentrated laundry detergent, here are a few small steps you can take to help preserve the environment :
- Wash your laundry in cold water.
- Choose a biodegradable detergent. The Environmental Choice certification guarantees that the product will not harm either your health or the environment. Certification by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ensures that the product is biodegradable at a rate of 60% or more within 28 days.
- Reduce the number of loads of laundry you do in a week – certain articles of clothing may be worn more than once!
- Whenever possible, hang dry your clothing.

free.
