Reusable bags
Did you
know that plastic bags were first introduced in the 1970s?
That’s right, way back when human beings could actually get by
without them! They are now part of everyday life, but it is
possible – and vital – that they be eliminated.
TRUTHS AND CONSEQUENCES ABOUT PLASTIC BAGS
According to Recyc-Québec :
- In Quebec only, close to a billion plastics bags are buried in garbage sites every year. Once buried, a plastic bag takes about 400 years to decompose.
- Each Quebec resident uses an average of 350 bags per year. A plastic bag has an average life span of 20 minutes.
- Polyethylene is the type of plastic used to make bags. The raw material that goes into the fabrication of polyethylene is crude oil. That again!
In January 2006, Metro became the first food distributor in Quebec
to offer customers reusable bags, an initiative for which Metro was
awarded the 2007 Phoenix Environmental Award, for the relevance of
the initiative and the quality of its bag.
Our bag is made 100% from post-consumer recycled materials and is 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life. Even the two sets of handles are recyclable! Our bags don’t contain lead and are washable in lukewarm water.
Here’s a few steps to take to prevent cross-contamination of foods:
Wash your reusable bags frequently, especially after carrying fresh products such as meat, poultry, fish or fruits and vegetables.
Put your fresh meat, poultry and fish in separate bags from fruits and vegetables.
If you’re using reusable bags to carry non-food items, you should wash them thoroughly before using them for groceries.

WHY USE A REUSABLE BAG?
Because you are doing something very beneficial for the environment — and also, because this measure does not inconvenience you at all. It’s no harder to use and after a short while, it doesn’t cost you more.Remember that it is always better to buy biodegradable bags for your kitchen refuse instead of plastic grocery bags. You reduce the number of bags discarded in the environment (not to mention that when perforated, people often double up the bags to use in their kitchen refuse container).
I KEEP FORGETTING THEM IN MY
CAR!
