Chicken facts
  • Did you know chicken contains 11 essential elements in a healthy diet? Rich in protein, niacin and vitamin B6, it is also a good source of vitamin B12, zinc, phosphorous and potassium.
  • White or dark, chicken meat is extra-lean under Canada's food rules. Raw or cooked, leg or breast meat contains less than 7.5 % fats and these fats are less saturated and higher in poly-unsaturated fats than those found in meat animals. In addition, dark meat contains twice the iron of white meat!
  • It's absolutely essential to cook chicken well so as to avoid any form of bacterial infection. To be sure you've cooked it thoroughly, simply insert a meat thermometer in the meatiest part of the chicken; if the thermometer reaches a temperature at or about 185°F (85°C), it's ready to serve!
