Channa fish

 

The channa, commonly known as “snakehead”, is certainly one of the most exotic fish that can be found at your Metro fishmonger’s counter. 

 

Characteristics

The channa can measure close to one metre and as the ability to breathe when out of the water for long periods.Its delicate, firm and boneless flesh lends itself to a wide range of cooking methods.

There are about two dozen species in the channa fish family and they almost all come from the Orient, mostly China. Asians have been eating this fish for a long time and many believe the channa has medicinal virtues in that it is thought to accelerate healing of wound and surgical incisions.

Channa is an excellent source of vitamins A, B6 and niacin. It also provides an appreciable amount of potassium, phosphorous, calcium and selenium.
