Montreal, March 28th, 2007 – More than 1.7
million reusable grocery bags have been sold since the concept was
launched in January 2006, an indication of just how popular the
bags are with Metro, Metro Plus, Super C and Marché Richelieu
supermarket customers.
METRO is pleased to announce that it has given a cheque in the
amount of $15,000 to ENvironnement JEUnesse, a non-profit
organization whose mission is to reinforce the development of an
environmental conscience and awareness of critical issues among
young people so that they can make the right civil choices to
ensure a viable future.
“Reusable bags have been hugely popular ever since they were
launched”, mentioned Serge Boulanger, Vice-President, Marketing,
Quebec Division. “We want to promote the reusable aspect of these
bags and act, if only in a small way, as a change agent. This is
why we firmly believe that by supporting ENvironnement JEUnesse,
our donation goes even further because young people are made aware
of environmental issues, which will allow them to make enlightened
choices for future generations”, explains Mr. Boulanger.
“We are very pleased that Metro has chosen ENvironnement JEUnesse.
The $15,000 donation will be used entirely to improve our training
programs pertaining to the healthy management of residual waste for
the 12-25 years old. Our training sessions are offered more than
300 times a year in many educational establishments and school
commissions across Québec”, mentioned Jérôme Normand, General
Manager of ENvironnement JEUnesse.
Developed in partnership with Boissons Gazeuses Environnement (BGE)
and RECYC-QUÉBEC, the bag is made of 100% recycled plastic and is
machine washable as well as recyclable. One bag can replace two or
three conventional grocery bags and may be used to return
containers that are “consignée Québec” to authorized points of
sale.
