March 28, 2008 - A&P Canada turns off the lights in support of Earth Hour

- Stores will reduce or turn off lighting -

TORONTO, March 28, 2008 – A&P Canada will join millions of people around the world by dimming their lights at participating stores across Ontario to support Earth Hour. A global initiative led by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to help raise awareness about global warming, Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2008.

While all participating A&P stores, including A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, The Barn and Loeb will remain open and fully operational, at 8:00 p.m. (where open, please see www.freshobsessed.com for store hours) customers will notice dimmed lights at store level as the stores show their support by cutting down on their electricity usage.

This is not the first time A&P Canada will reduce its electrical usage. In the summer of 2007 the company was recognized by Hydro Toronto for reducing energy consumption in stores across the GTA.

A&P Canada has committed to help Leave it Greener by joining in environmental initiatives that everyone can benefit from. A&P Canada is the first to offer plastic bag recycling bins in all stores across Ontario. Customers can return their conventional plastic grocery bags to any A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, The Barn, Loeb and Food Basics stores. The used plastic bags collected at stores are combined with plastic films at store level and sold to companies who use the plastic to manufacture new bags containing post consumer recycled film.

Since the recycle plastic bag program was launched in 1996, A&P Canada has diverted 3.57 million pounds – or 250 million plastic bags – from reaching landfills

Serving Canadians since 1927, A&P Canada Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of METRO INC. and operates more than 280 grocery stores under the A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, The Barn, Loeb and Food Basics banners throughout Ontario.
