April 3, 2008 - It's in the bag! A&P Canada launches Reusable Bag Design Contest for kids

TORONTO, April 3, 2008 – Is your child a future Picasso or Van Gogh? Or maybe the master of all things arts & craft? Whatever their artistic flair, A&P is giving kids in Ontario a chance to celebrate Earth Day by showcasing their talents with the launch of the A&P Reusable Bag Design Contest.
“Since the introduction of our Leave it Greener program in 2006, more than 2 million reusable bags have been sold in A&P stores,” said Selena Fiacco, director, communications, A&P Canada. “In honour of Earth Day 2008, we are redesigning our ever-popular reusable bag to give it a fresh look and challenging kids to think green all at the same time.”

The winning design will be used on all A&P Canada reusable bags beginning September 2008. The winner will also receive 5,000 AIR MILES® reward miles. The second place winner will receive four samples of his/her bag design printed on the A&P reusable bag in addition to 1,000 AIR MILES® reward miles while the third place winner will receive one sample of his/her bag design printed on the A&P reusable bag and 500 AIR MILES® reward miles.

Budding artists up to grade six are invited to participate in this drawing and colouring contest.

The contest is available at A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, The Barn and Loeb stores in Ontario, excluding Thunder Bay, and runs until April 14, 2008. All entries must be mailed to: Reusable Bag Design Contest Coordinator, A&P Canada, 5559 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke, Ontario, M9B 1B9. The winners will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2008. Full contest details are available in-store at www.freshobsessed.com.

In 2006, A&P Canada launched its plastic bag recycling program in select stores and has been expanding the program since. Beginning fall 2007, A&P Canada also added the program to its 115 Food Basics stores and it’s expected that 30 million plastic bags will be diverted from landfills each year as a result. METRO INC., A&P Canada’s parent company, was the first grocery power in Canada to sell its own reusable bag.

Leave it Greener
Continuing its commitment to Leave it Greener, A&P Canada wants to help keep plastic grocery bags out of landfills. To date, A&P Canada has recycled approximately 3.57 million lbs of plastic film, the equivalent of 250 million bags, and sold more than 2 million reusable bags across Ontario. The Leave it Greener platform reinforces A&P Canada’s commitment to a greener world and helps Ontarians recognize how they can help Leave it Greener too.
