June 27, 2008 - A&P Canada scoops out the peanuts with a new line of frozen dessert products

Selection Gourmet Iced Treats are certified peanut- and almond-free

Toronto (ONTARIO) June 27, 2008
– Much to the delight of parents and children alike, METRO Inc., including its A&P Canada chains across Ontario, is launching Selection Gourmet Iced Treats, a line of new products that are CAC (Certified Allergen Control) certified peanut- and almond-free. This private-label line includes an assortment of icy pops, sorbet, frozen yogurt and ice cream in a delicious variety of flavours – a perfect and safe treat right in time for the warm weather.

“Studies conducted among consumers over the past several years have indicated that the number of people who are affected by food allergies is increasing,” says Serge Boulanger, vice-president, marketing, METRO Inc. “In fact, the number of children who suffer from peanut allergies has doubled in North America over the past decade. We felt it was important to build on our line by developing a product that would satisfy the needs of parents and children affected by peanut allergies.”

“For several months, METRO has been working with the Association québécoise des allergies alimentaires in order to offer people suffering from food allergies a selection of our private label products that are CAC certified,” commented Johanne Choinière, senior vice-president, national procurement and corporate brands, METRO Inc. “The Selection line of frozen dessert products, which will be popular among children and parents are both delicious and safe. All products will have the CAC logo, so our customers can quickly identify all safe products while browsing the aisles of our supermarkets.”

From chocolate ice cream and rainbow sorbet to fudge bars, tropical fiesta icy pops and black cherry frozen yogurt, Selection Gourmet Iced Treats are now available at A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, Loeb, The Barn Market and Food Basics stores across Ontario. About Association québécoise des allergies alimentaires (AQAA)
Founded in 1990 by parents of children with food allergies, the Association québécoise des allergies alimentaires (AQAA – www.aqaa.qc.ca) works to improve the quality of life of people living with this reality. It does so by offering support and information, organizing education and prevention activities, and encouraging research into food allergies and anaphylaxis.

Furthermore, in order to enable consumers, and more particularly those who face food allergies, to make informed and confident choices, the AQAA developed the CAC Program, in collaboration with Health Canada, other government agencies, representatives of the agri-food industry, legal advisors, experts in certification (Bureau de normalisation du Québec – BNQ – www.bnq.qc.ca) and consumers with allergies.
