September 4 2008 - New Food Basics opens in Scarborough - New discount L.E.E.D. store offers residents, Always more for Less!
TORONTO, September 3,
2008 – Scarborough residents can visit their new Food
Basics store at 255 Morningside Avenue beginning Wednesday,
September 3, 2008. The new store offers price savvy customers a
wide assortment of quality grocery, produce, dairy and meat
products all at low prices. To celebrate the grand reopening,
customers will receive a limited edition Food Basics reusable
bag.
“We are pleased to offer Scarborough residents a new discount alternative where they will have always more for less on thousands of products,” said Richard Beaubien, vice-president, Discount Operations. “Customers will be impressed by Food Basics’ selection of low-priced fresh and grocery items designed to complete their everyday shopping needs.”
Store Manager, Dave Darling; Director Field Merchandising, George Lotoski; Vice President Discount Operations East, Bob Seguin and Councillor Ron Moeser will be on hand for the official opening ceremonies at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3.
Food Basics is Metro’s discount grocery retail store in Ontario. With over 100 stores across Ontario, this Food Basics location will be the first store built with the expectations to become L.E.E.D certified. As part of Metro’s promise to Leave it greener, the new 40,000 square foot store features the L.E.E.D. (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) décor package and layout. The Food Basics store will feature new energy saving initiatives.
Customers are invited to participate in the grand opening celebrations with product tastings of key signature items in the store during the week. Other in-store activities taking place on September 3 include musical entertainment by the Island Sounds steel drum band (8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.), and stilt walkers and balloonists for kids (9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.).
Food Basics saves customers money on their grocery bill by carrying only the best selling brands and products complemented by our own low-priced private label brands. In addition, the new Food Basics store at 255 Morningside offers customers an increased selection of national brands. Customers can now find all of their favourite brands at exceptionally low prices.

L.E.E.D (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building rating system that was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2000 through a consensus based process. L.E.E.D is a tool for buildings of all types and size. L.E.E.D certification offers third party validation of a project’s green features and verifies that the building is operating exactly the way it was designed to. The new Food Basics store has been constructed in accordance with the L.E.E.D. Green Building Rating System. In order to be L.E.E.D. certified, a building must meet certain criteria in six separate “credit categories”.
