62 stores collect donations to support local food banks

TORONTO, ON - December 16, 2008 – Metro Ontario Inc. is encouraging residents of the GTA to spread the festive cheer and remember the less fortunate by participating in its holiday food drive. Donations of nutritious, non-perishable food can be delivered to any of the 62 Metro stores across the GTA, including stores in Hamilton and Collingwood, which will benefit families locally. For a complete list of store locations, visit metro.ca.

“Metro is proud to be partnering with the Daily Bread Food Bank to help feed families across the GTA,” says Serge Boulanger, vice-president of marketing, Metro Inc. “Eating right and eating well is something we fundamentally believe in and this food drive ensures that the less fortunate are provided that opportunity.”

This week, Metro marks special “holiday hamper” events including radio remotes at local stores Wednesday and an all-day televised live celebration on BT and City Television this Friday. Donations are especially encouraged on these days, but for those not able to do so, contributions will be accepted until January 2, 2009.

To ensure needs continue to be met, the Daily Bread Food Bank’s goal is to raise at least 500,000 pounds of food and $500,000 by the beginning of next year. Food items most needed this holiday season include:

  • Peanut butter
  • Baby formula/ food
  • Canned fruit, vegetables and beans
  • Canned fish and meat
  • Dried pasta and tomato sauce
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Rice and lentils
  • Cans of hearty soup and stew
  • Powdered, canned and tetra pak milk

“The holiday season is a festive time of year, but it is also a time of need for too many families,” says Gail Nyberg, Daily Bread Food Bank’s executive director. “With almost 80,000 people in the GTA using food banks every month, just one small donation from everyone in our community can make a big difference.”
