Be cool with a smoothie
A smoothie is a delicious, thirst-quenching drink
made from nutritious fruit. For those mornings when you’re
not that hungry, or when you are in a hurry, or even after a
gourmet feast, a smoothie is a refreshing summer delight. And you
can make one in an instant.
A smoothie is a cold, thirst-quenching drink that’s both nutritious and irresistibly delicious. It’s a thick beverage you make in a blender with fruit—preferably frozen—and juice. A good smoothie is velvety smooth and thick enough to hold a straw motionless.
Even though frozen fruit is the basis for a smoothie, you can add yogurt, milk, ice for a “slush” texture, or ice cream. There are no limits… just use your imagination!
There’s nothing worse than leaving home on an empty stomach, so here’s a smoothie that’s not too filling. It will provide at least enough energy to get you to work, and then you could eat something a little more substantial once your appetite returns
- Fresh orange juice (1¾ cups)
- Frozen strawberries (½ cup)
- Frozen mango (½ cup)
For an afternoon smoothie with a unique new taste, substitute the strawberries with fresh ginger. It’s so good, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try this sooner!
Tofu offers truly superior nutritional value. It’s full of iron and other nutrients. Since tofu has next to no taste, it’s a great ingredient for a luscious smoothie with tons of protein.
- Soft tofu (½ cup)
- Milk (½ cup)
- Orange juice (½ cup)
- Frozen blueberries (½ cup)
- Frozen strawberries (½ cup)
- Egg (1)
- Honey to taste
Soft tofu is sometimes difficult to find. At your supermarket, look for containers that are similar to single-serve juice boxes. At Metro, you can find soft tofu in the natural foods section.
For those evenings when you feel like a feast but you don’t want to overdo it, a delicious dessert smoothie is just the thing.
- Mashed banana (1)
- Fresh whole milk (1½ cup)
- Scoops of chocolate ice cream (2)
- Mint leaves (for decoration)
- Substitute soya milk for cow's milk
- Substitute ice cream for yogurt
- If you have a sweet tooth, add honey or brown sugar
- For a truly gourmet smoothie, add whipped cream
