Spicy Apples with Maple Syrup

Recipe ingredients
- 6 red apples, peeled
- 6 cloves
- 1 lemon
- 1 tsp. (5 mL) nutmeg
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) maple syrup
- 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) sweet white wine
Preparation
Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C).
Peel the apples and remove the core from the bottom using a knife or an apple corer.
Rub lemon on the apples to prevent darkening. Set aside.
Prick a clove into each apple and place the apples standing in an oven ready dish with the cinnamon sticks. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
In a small saucepan, slowly heat the white wine and the maple syrup for 5 minutes without boiling.
Pour the hot sauce on the apples until they are halfway submerged in sauce. Cover and poach in the oven at 350 °F (180 °C) for approximately 45 minutes or until the apples are nicely tender. Baste with sauce occasionally.
Remove the cloves and the cinnamon sticks before serving.
To serve, place an apple on a plate and drizzle with sauce.
Suggestion
Garnish each plate with chopped walnuts that were grilled in the oven for a few minutes beforehand.A small scoop of vanilla or maple nut ice cream on the warm sauce should satisfy the sweet tooth in your guests.
