Recipe ingredients

  • 3 cups (750 mL) red apples, chopped fine
  • 4 cups (1 L) fresh cranberries
  • 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) brown sugar
  • 1 cup (250 mL) water
  • 1/2 tsp. (2 mL) ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped walnuts

Preparation

Sterilize jars by boiling them in water.
In a large saucepan, bring apples, cranberries, brown sugar and water to a boil, stirring from time to time.
Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring frequently.
Sterilize lids.
Stir cinnamon and walnuts into fruit mixture and simmer 5 more minutes.
Fill hot, sterilized 250-mL (1-cup) jars with sauce, leaving 0.5 cm (1/4 inch) headroom.
Screw lids onto jars.

  • Let cool 24 hours and store.
  • Suggestion

Always use the freshest nuts for home canning. Shelled nuts must be crunchy. Avoid soft or shrivelled nuts.
Serve as a dessert with cake or ice cream. This sauce is also excellent with poultry.
