Recipe ingredients

  • 2 big Spanish onions
  • 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour*
  • 1 tsp. (5 mL) salt
  • 1/2 tsp. (2 mL) each: paprika, Cayenne pepper and dry mustard
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup (180 mL) beer, room temperature*
  • Peanut oil for frying*

Preparation

Peel onions and cut into 1/2-in. (1-cm) thick slices. Separate into rings and set aside.
In a bowl, mix flour, salt, paprika, Cayenne pepper, dry mustard and egg together. Whisk in beer gradually.
In a deep skillet, heat 3 in. (7.5 cm) of oil until small bubbles begin to break the surface.
Dip onion rings into flour mixture and fry in small batches until gold, about 3 min.
Drain on paper towels and serve.
