Recipe ingredients

  • Hamburger steaks
  • 1 lb. (450 g) ground beef
  • 3 Tbsp. (45 mL) sun-dried tomato pesto
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) chopped curly or flat-leaf parsley
  • 1½ tsp. (7 mL) chopped fresh rosemary
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Caramelized onions
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) butter*
  • 2 Tbsp. (30 mL) Irresistibles olive oil*
  • 2 cooking onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium shallot, minced
  • 1 tsp. (5 mL) sugar* or maple sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) Irresistibles balsamic vinegar*
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) chopped fresh rosemary
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste
  • Accompaniments
  • Commercial gravy* or barbecue sauce as needed
  • Fries and/or tossed salad

Preparation

Hamburger steaks: combine ground beef with other ingredients and shape into thick patties.
Caramelized onions: heat butter and oil in a skillet over medium-low heat and brown onions and shallot. Add sugar and balsamic vinegar and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring often until onions are caramelized.
Add rosemary and season to taste.
In another skillet, pan-fry hamburger steaks over medium-high heat until meat shows no pink.
Top steaks with caramelized onions and gravy and serve with fries and/or tossed salad.
