Treat Mom to the Best on her Day

Since the dawn of history, men have adored earth mothers and venerated their mysterious powers. The ancient Greeks celebrated Rhea, the mother of all their gods, in the spring. Nowadays, in most countries of the world, mothers are honoured for the virtues they embody: love, kindness, courage and even magic!

Because there are a million different ways of being a great mother, there are a million ways of celebrating their devotion. For Mother’s Day, borrow her apron and prepare serve a meal she’ll never forget, served in the warm, comfy atmosphere of home. Here then are some practical suggestions to help loving fathers and children make the day truly extraordinary one that will warm the cockles of their special lady’s heart!

Brunch - an Easy Fun Meal
  • Brunch, as its name suggests, combines breakfast and lunch and is served any time between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Ideal for mothers who seldom get a chance to sleep in, brunch is a relaxed meal built around a festive variety of easy-to-make dishes and foods requiring no preparation.
  • If warm spring weather has arrived on schedule for Mother's Day, have brunch outdoors for the added bonus of an afternoon spent soaking up sunshine. Get the patio furniture ready just in case!
The Possibilities are Endless
  • Planning a brunch menu is practically child's play! Sweet and savoury dishes, covering all bases. One rule: be guided by your imagination and your tastes... and especially your mother's!
  • First wake up everybody's taste buds with various fruit juices, coffee or hot chocolate with a hint of cinnamon. Real sleepyheads might need something stronger, a mimosa, combining the effervescence of a sparkling wine with the tangy sweetness of orange juice.
  • There are myriads of breads to choose from: sweet buns, bagels, plain or chocolate croissants, muffins, sourdough bread, multigrain and banana-nut breads to name a few! Jams, preserves, cheeses and cold cuts go well with most or all of them.
  • Scrambled eggs, quiches, omelettes, ham, and pasta with salmon, spinach or tomato pies will tame any appetite.
  • Add a refreshing, vitamin-rich touch to the meal with assorted salads and fresh fruit, served whole, cut, in brochettes or a pie.
  • Kids will love making crepes with Dad. Set out various sweet and savoury garnishes: ham, asparagus, grated cheese, maple syrup, fruits, yogurt and nuts.
Plotting the Perfect Meal
  • A brunch may not require a lot of cooking, but it does require some planning to bring all the elements together at the big moment!
  • Everything has to be done in secret one or two days before. Make lists of what you need and what you have to do so that you don't forget anything.
  • The day before, prepare a dish that is easily reheated, the crepe batter and cold dishes such as fresh fruit or vegetable salads.
  • Make sure that you have all the necessary serving platters and utensils and a large basket lined with a big cloth napkin in which to keep buns and croissants hot.
  • Set the table the night before or early in the morning with a cheerful tablecloth and napkins, flowers or a lovely centrepiece.
  • The food can be laid out on the table buffet-style. The children will fight for the honour of serving Mom.
The Secret to Success Is Surprise!
  • All shows of affection from a kindergartener's necklace of buttons and macaroni, to a framed photomontage or poem or song written for the occasion are precious to a mother.
  • Flowers are traditional and always appreciated. The art lies in the presentation. A bouquet offered with endearments by a tot can't miss!
  • If your mother is allergic to flowers, make up a basket of her favourite products. Visit your local Metro and follow your inspiration: fine groceries or homey treats. Our private label “The Irresistibles” offers you a wide variety of luxury products such as Belgian cookies, flavoured coffees or smoked Pacific salmon that will show her how much you care.
