Azaleas

This shrub bears small leaves and beautiful white, pink, red or two-toned flowers (pink bordered with white) and likes lots of sunlight. Make sure the soil stays moist at all times without saturating it. If the soil gets too dry, the plant will lose many of its leaves; you’ll need to soak it in water for an hour, drain it, then empty any overflow from the flowerpot saucer. Regular watering calls for 300 mL of water.

Bouquets of Roses

To arrange a pretty bouquet that will last a long time, first remove the paper wrapped around the roses. Cut 1 in. (2.5 cm) from the base of the stem as well as the leaves and thorns that would be submerged in water. Place the flowers in a vase of lukewarm water and add a nutritive solution to prolong their life. To keep the roses for a longer period, it is important to change the water every two days and not place them close to source of heat (sunlight, radiators, TV sets, etc.) or cold or hot air currents.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums sport clusters of very pretty flowers at the ends of their stems. Though this plant 20 to 30 cm in height is content in average light, it does best close to a window. Water as soon as the soil becomes dry – about 300 mL for each watering – and empty any overflow from the flowerpot saucer.

Dahlias and Pansies

Very popular on Mother’s Day, dahlias and pansies are easy to care for, appreciate sunny, airy spots. Give them enough water to keep their soil quite humid. You can transplant them as early as mid-May to flower boxes, patio pots or directly into the ground and enjoy them all summer!

Hibiscus

This shrub, found in various tropical regions of Asia, is cultivated for its large single flowers (10 to 15 cm). Keep it at a temperature from 20 °C to 22 °C (never under 15 °C), near a sunny window, because it needs a lot of light. Water it regularly in summer and let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.

Miniature Roses

Did you know miniature roses come in four plants to a pot? If you trim them regularly, they will flower all year long! Keep this plant in a sunny spot, at a temperature from 16° C to 24° C and make sure the soil is kept humid at all times. Regular feedings of 20-20-20 fertilizer will produce healthy growth.

Orchids

Did you know orchids are the largest family of flowering plants? More than 3,000 varieties have been identified worldwide excluding polar and desert regions. Orchids tolerate direct morning sunlight, but generally appreciate rather moderate light. Give this plan water at room temperature to keep its soil moist but not drenched. Fertilizer at half the recommended dose is ample for your plant to thrive.

Rose Bushes

Why not plant beautiful rose bushes bordering your home or garden to brighten your summer? Be sure to choose locations that benefit from more than six hours of full sun each day, however. Water the soil regularly but avoid soaking the foliage and use flower fertilizer for beautiful roses all summer long.
