Glögg or Scandinavian Mulled Wine

Ingredients

Add all
  • 1 stick

    cinnamon

  • 3

    whole cloves

  • zest of 1 orange

  • 1 cup
    (250 mL)

    water

  • 4 cups
    (1 L)

    bordeaux

  • raisins to taste

  • 3/4 cup
    (190 mL)

    cognac

  • 1 1/2 cups
    (375 mL)

    port

  • white or brown sugar to taste

  • slivered almonds to taste

Preparation

Tie cinnamon, cloves, and orange zest up in a bit of cheesecloth.

Put bundled spices in water and bring to a boil. Boil uncovered for about 30 minutes.

Add Bordeaux and let stand at room temperature for 12 hours.

Soak raisins in 1/2 cup (125 mL) cognac for 12 hours.

The day of the party, heat wine and add port and remaining cognac. Heat gently keeping mixture under a boil and sweeten to taste!

Stir in cognac-soaked raisins and slivered almonds and serve hot.
