Pantry staples
A pantry plays a special role in any kitchen. Before modern refrigerators were invented, the pantry was as essential as the ice box. Today it is used for storing dry foods. Whether it’s meticulously organized or cluttered with forgotten foods purchased in duplicate, a basic pantry usually contains canned food, condiments, oils, pasta, rice, dried beans, and other ingredients. That’s why we call these foods “pantry staples” – having them on hand prevents you from needing to constantly travel to the store every time you want to make a recipe!
Whether you’re passionate about cooking or not so much, the contents of your pantry should be about the same: a few types of flour and sugar (for last-minute pancakes for instance), some oils (canola, olive, and nut), vinegars (at least two to enhance your salads), pasta, rice, semolina, and quinoa (for a bit of variety), as well as your favourite condiments, cereals and oat flakes, dried nuts and fruits, and canned goods.
As for dried herbs and spices, many people choose to keep them in their own separate cupboard or drawer. But it’s important to keep in mind they don’t last forever and they will lose their flavour over time. Store them away from the heat in a dark, dry area and if you’ve purchased pouches make sure to transfer them to individual, airtight jars. This will help preserve their flavour longer.
A well-stocked pantry means tons of possibilities. But if your pantry is disorganized and overstuffed, it might benefit from a bit of decluttering which will help you prevent food waste. That way you’ll know which staples you need to purchase and which foods have been in your pantry for a while and should be cooked.
