Enjoying summer fruits and vegetables

Summer, the season for fruits and vegetables!

Hot summer days make us want to enjoy light meals. The wide selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in Quebec and Canada are a great reason to eat local. And beautiful summer days are perfect for spending your evening outside instead of in the kitchen.

That’s why summer is the best time to prepare simple meals such as delicious, bright salads and other dishes that showcase fruits and veggies!

Discover all the flavours of the summer!

Discover advice from our Metro experts

During summer, fruits and vegetables fill our plates. With the following tips, you’ll be able to keep them as long as possible in the fridge or have delicious fruits on hand year-round.

Keep your veggies fresh

Lettuce and spinach will remain fresh longer if washed, drained, wrapped in paper towels, then stored in the fridge in an air-tight plastic bag. If the leafy greens you purchased come in an air-tight bag, put them in the fridge as is.

Other fresh vegetables shouldn't be washed before being eaten because that makes them rot quicker.

Freeze berries to enjoy them all year

To freeze whole berries, simply spread them on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer. Once frozen, you can store them in freezer bags and then put them back. That way they won’t freeze in clumps and you’ll be able to use only the quantity you want.

Cook delicious pies

To prevent the juices from your fruits from soaking the crust of a stone fruit pie, place half of the fruit skin side down on the dough. If you’re making a berry pie, brush some egg white on the crust first. And use some tapioca to thicken the juices.
