Core apples, cut into eight unpeeled wedges. In a large skillet, melt butter and brown apple wedges on medium heat for 10 minutes.
Turn apples over and sprinkle with sugar. Add orange zest.
Cook 10 minutes on low.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cover the bottom of a 9-in. (23-cm) diameter baking tin with apples and kiwis. Pour apple syrup over the fruit.
Cover with short pastry crust, tucking in edges.
Bake 30 minutes. Serve warm.
