Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Add the dates and 3/4 of the parmesan cheese and combine.
In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk and butter.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry and fold with a spatula until just blended. Do not overmix.
Divide the batter evenly in 12 well-buttered muffin tins or use paper liners. Place a generous pinch of the remaining cheese on top of each muffin. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a tester comes out clean. Serve warm.
