In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and cook onion, stirring for 3 minutes or until softened. Sprinkle with flour and cook, stirring for 1 minute. Gradually stir in milk; bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.Simmer, stirring for 5 minutes or until thickened. Do not boil.Remove saucepan from heat; stir in cheese and salt into sauce.
