Hamburger steaks: combine ground beef with other ingredients and shape into thick patties. Caramelized onions: heat butter and oil in a skillet over medium-low heat and brown onions and shallot. Add sugar and balsamic vinegar and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring often until onions are caramelized. Add rosemary and season to taste. In another skillet, pan-fry hamburger steaks over medium-high heat until meat shows no pink. Top steaks with caramelized onions and gravy and serve with fries and/or tossed salad.

    sun-dried tomato pesto
  • 1/4 cup

    chopped curly or flat-leaf parsley
  • 1/2 tsp.

    chopped fresh rosemary
  • 1
    garlic clove, minced
  • caramelized onions

  • 1 Tbsp.
    (15 mL)
    butter
  • 2 Tbsp.
    (30 mL)
    olive oil

    cooking onions, thinly sliced
  • 1
    medium shallot, minced
  • 1 tsp.
    (5 mL)
    sugar or maple sugar
  • 1 Tbsp.
    (15 mL)
    balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp.

    chopped fresh rosemary

  • freshly ground pepper to taste
  • accompaniments


  • commercial gravy or barbecue sauce as needed
