Hamburger steaks: combine ground beef with other ingredients and shape into thick patties.
Caramelized onions: heat butter and oil in a skillet over medium-low heat and brown onions and shallot. Add sugar and balsamic vinegar and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring often until onions are caramelized.
Add rosemary and season to taste.
In another skillet, pan-fry hamburger steaks over medium-high heat until meat shows no pink.
Top steaks with caramelized onions and gravy and serve with fries and/or tossed salad.
