In a saucepan, gently bring milk and butter to a boil.
In a small bowl, thin the cornstarch with 2 Tbsp. (30 mL) of milk. Add the beaten egg, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix well. Pour this mixture in the boiling milk and cook until it thickens, stirring continuously with a whisk. Remove immediately from heat and serve hot or warm.
Dip pieces of fruit or cake using a fork or dip the rolled wafers directly in the dish.
